DIET AND SLEEP IN THE ELDERLY
AbstractPoor quality and reduced number of hours of sleep, resulting from the aging process, are common complaints in the elderly. In this context, with this research we intend to reflect on the importance of food in improving the quality and duration of sleep in the elderly. The research was carried out in the PubMed, B-on and Scopus databases, using the following descriptors: “diet”, “sleep”, “elderly”. The results show few studies that relate the two variables and the effectiveness of feeding as a non-pharmacological intervention to improve the quality and duration of sleep in the elderly, thus contributing to a better quality of life and well-being. The education/promotion of a healthy lifestyle, with particular attention to food and nutrition, should be considered throughout the life cycle and, particularly, in the training of professionals with a view to improving health standards and quality of life and of sleep in the elderly.
