Abstract

Introduction: The teaching-learning process in undergraduate medical programs is marked by challenges concerning the comprehensive training of professionals equipped with competencies and skills that go beyond traditional education: empathy, the ability to handle challenging situations, communication, and public speaking skills. Experience report: This is an experience report that presents reflections from a medical student serving as a mentor in the course Morphofunctional Foundations of the Health and Disease Process I for two consecutive semesters in the years 2021 and 2022. Discussion: The practice of academic mentoring plays a key role in fostering autonomy and professional development among mentors, encouraging interaction between students and faculty, and providing support to undergraduate students. Some of the notable benefits include improved student performance during medical school, preparation for professional medical practice, exposure to teaching methodologies, and the enhancement of active learning strategies. Additionally, it contributes to the overall improvement of undergraduate education. Conclusion: In medical education, the role of student mentors is crucial for academic and professional development. However, despite the growing prominence of topics related to Medical Education in Brazil, further scientific research is needed to deepen the understanding of this subject, overcome existing challenges, and enhance the journey of students who are the future professionals in the healthcare field.
